Gulf Islands: a week for first-timers

The southern Gulf Islands are the friendliest place to learn the BC coast: short hops between protected harbours, warm-ish summer water, and a marina or marine-park dock most evenings. Here's an easy seven-night loop. Distances are short — the longest legs are a couple of hours — but the passes (Active, Porlier, Gabriola) run hard on the tide, so check the current tables and pick your timing from official sources, not from us.

Night 1 — Sidney

Provision and start downtown at Port Sidney Marina, or just north at Van Isle Marina. Both are easy walk-to-town bases for a shakedown night before you head into the islands.

Nights 2–3 — Pender & Saturna

Cross to North Pender: Otter Bay and Port Browning are both relaxed and well-serviced, and Poets Cove at Bedwell Harbour is the resort option (and a customs port if you're arriving from the San Juans).

Night 4 — Ganges (Salt Spring)

The social hub of the islands. Ganges Marina has plenty of visitor moorage and the Saturday market is worth timing for; Salt Spring Marina is the alternative across the harbour.

Night 5 — Montague Harbour (Galiano)

One of the prettiest anchorages on the coast. Pick up a marine-park mooring buoy (first-come) and walk the shell-midden beach at low water.

Nights 6–7 — Thetis & Gabriola

Work north to Telegraph Harbour on Thetis (famous for its dock-store milkshakes), then over to Gabriola — Silva Bay or Page's Resort — to stage for the run home. Quieter Cowichan-side stops like Genoa Bay and Maple Bay make easy add-ons.
